Do you understand how to fight for your marriage on your knees? Let me set the scene.
You love your husband. But lately, loving him feels like the hardest thing you do.
Maybe he’s distant. Maybe you’re both exhausted. Maybe ministry has slowly crept in between you and turned your marriage into a scheduling conflict. Or maybe there’s been a hurt so deep that trust feels like a foreign word now.
You know something is wrong. And deep down, you know you don’t want to walk away.
That quiet knowing; that’s not weakness. That is a woman who is ready to fight for her marriage.
But here’s what nobody tells pastor’s wives and ministry wives: the most powerful fighting you will ever do happens not in a counselor’s office, not in a conversation, and not in a book. It happens on your knees, before God, in the secret place.
You want to know how to fight for your marriage? This is where you start.
I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to be the woman behind the man of God, quietly falling apart while everyone assumes you’re fine. I know what it’s like to smile on Sunday and cry on Monday. And I know what it looks like to choose prayer, real, raw, desperate prayer, over giving up.
These five ways changed how I fight. They will change how you fight too.

1. Pray Scripture Over Your Husband Like It’s Your Only Weapon (Because It Is)
Most of us pray about our husband. Very few of us pray Scripture over our husband.
There is a difference. A big one.
When you pray your feelings, you circle the same pain. But when you pray God’s Word, you activate His promises. The Bible says in Isaiah 55:11 that God’s Word will not return to Him empty. It will accomplish what He sent it to do.
That includes your marriage.
Start small. Pick one verse a week. Write your husband’s name into it.
“Lord, let [his name] find his delight in You. Let him not lean on his own understanding. Give him wisdom and a heart that seeks You first.“
You are not just praying. You’re releasing something into the spiritual atmosphere over your home and your husband that the enemy cannot touch.
When you’re learning how to fight for your marriage, Scripture is your greatest weapon. The enemy wants your marriage in ruins. He especially wants your marriage in ruins because a pastor’s household under attack is a ministry under attack.
Don’t give him the victory.
Practical steps:
- Keep a small prayer journal with a verse each week for your husband
- Pray the verse out loud — there is power in the spoken Word
- Try Ephesians 3:16–19, Psalm 34:18, Proverbs 3:5–6, and Philippians 4:7 as starting places
2. Invite the Holy Spirit Into the Specific Wound
Here’s something I learned the hard way: generic prayers get generic results.
When there is a real wound in your marriage, betrayal, emotional distance, a season of coldness, you have to get specific with God.
Figuring out how to fix your marriage when trust is broken starts with being honest with God about exactly what is broken. He already knows, but when you say it out loud to Him, something in you shifts.
You move from surviving the pain to submitting it.
Maybe the wound is that your husband pours everything into the congregation and you feel like you get the leftovers.
Maybe it’s that ministry life has made him hard to reach, emotionally unavailable, always in pastor mode, never husband mode.
There could have been a betrayal. Maybe there were words spoken that left a mark.
Whatever it is, bring the specific thing to God. Don’t bury it in vague language.
Try praying something like this:
“God, I am hurt by ___________. I don’t know how to move past it on my own. I need You to heal what I can’t fix. I need You to do in him what I cannot change. And I need You to change me where I am wrong too.“
That last part matters. When you are learning how to fight for your marriage, you have to be willing to let God search you too. Not just your husband.
The Holy Spirit is not just a comforter. He is a counselor. Let Him into the specific rooms you’ve been keeping closed.

3. Fast and Pray Specifically for Spiritual Breakthrough in Your Marriage
Fasting is the thing most of us know about and very few of us do.
But when a marriage is in crisis, or even in a slow, quiet drift, fasting is a spiritual power tool.
Jesus said some things only come out through prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). Your marriage may be facing something that prayer alone hasn’t moved.
Fasting adds a spiritual urgency that shifts things in the unseen realm.
As a pastor’s wife or ministry wife, you may feel like you are always doing the spiritual heavy lifting. You pray for your husband’s sermons. You intercede for the congregation. You fast for the church.
But are you fasting for your marriage?
Knowing how to fight for your marriage when separated, emotionally or physically, often requires this level of spiritual intensity. When two people have grown apart, or when walls have gone up, or when the enemy has built a stronghold in your home, fasting is one of the most underused weapons available to you.
You don’t have to do a 40-day fast. Start with one day.
A simple fasting + prayer guide for your marriage:
- Morning: Pray and declare Malachi 2:16 God hates divorce. He is for your marriage.
- Midday: Pray specifically for softening his heart and yours.
- Evening: Thank God for the marriage you’re believing for, before you see it. This is faith in action.
Breakthrough doesn’t always come immediately. But it does come. Hold on.
4. Pray for Yourself Not Just Your Marriage
This one is for you, my dear pastor’s wife.
You have been so focused on fighting for your marriage that you may have forgotten to fight for yourself in the process.
One of the clearest signs that a marriage is in trouble is emotional detachment, and what many ministry wives don’t realize is that they themselves are emotionally detached. Not because they stopped caring. Because they are depleted.
You cannot pour from an empty vessel. You definitely cannot love sacrificially when you are spiritually hollow.
The signs of emotional detachment in marriage don’t always look like coldness or distance. Sometimes they look like going through the motions. Smiling when you feel nothing. Praying words that feel like they’re bouncing off the ceiling.
That is a signal that you need healing too.
So get on your knees for yourself.
Pray prayers like these:
“God, restore my ability to feel. Heal the places in me that have gone numb. Help me to love my husband the way You designed me to love him, not out of duty, but out of overflow.“
“God, show me where I have emotionally withdrawn. Show me where I have built walls. Give me the courage to tear them down.“
Learning how to fight for your marriage also means fighting for the woman who is in that marriage. You matter. Your healing matters. A restored wife and a restored husband make a restored marriage.
Give yourself the same grace you would give anyone else who came to you for prayer.

5. Build a Prayer Hedge And Ask Others to Stand in the Gap With You
There is something in Christian culture that says a pastor’s wife should have it all together. That she shouldn’t need help. That to admit struggle is to undermine her husband’s ministry.
That lie has silenced too many women for too long.
You were not designed to fight alone.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 says a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. You and your husband are two strands. The third is God. But I also believe that God sends us people, trusted, praying people, to stand with us in battle.
Figuring out how to fight for your marriage in prayer gets exponentially more powerful when you invite even one trusted friend to agree with you in prayer.
You don’t have to share every detail. You don’t have to expose your husband. But you can ask a trusted, spiritually mature woman to pray with you for your marriage, without telling her everything. Simply ask, “I need someone to stand with me in prayer for my marriage right now. Will you commit to praying with me?“
And then together, build a prayer hedge around your home.
What a prayer hedge looks like:
- Praying Psalm 91 over your household regularly
- Declaring that no weapon formed against your marriage shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17)
- Asking God to close every door the enemy has opened in your home
- Praying for unity, intimacy, peace, and laughter to be restored
Knowing how to repair a marriage after a fight, or after a season, often requires this kind of community. You were never meant to be an island. Even in ministry, maybe especially in ministry, you need other women who will lock arms with you and refuse to let the enemy win.
A Final Word to You, Ministry Wife
You are tired. I see you.
You are the one holding the home together while your husband holds the church together. You’re the one praying for everyone else while quietly wondering if anyone is praying for you.
I am praying for you.
And I want you to know this: understanding how to fight for your marriage is not about having the perfect strategy. It’s about showing up on your knees, in the quiet, with nothing but your honest heart and a God who is faithful.
He is not finished with your marriage.
He’s not finished with your husband.
He is not finished with you.
You have more power on your knees than you will ever have in an argument, in a conversation, or in a crisis. The prayer closet is where marriages are made new.
So go fight. Go kneel. Go believe.
Your marriage is worth it. You are worth it.
With love and faith,
Kimberlee
