Christian Songs For Encouragement and Strength
Shoulders – For King & Country
I was introduced to “for King and Country” all the way back in 2016 and have been a fan ever since. Their song “Shoulders” has been a constant source of encouragement when I feel like I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.
This song reminds me that there is someone whose shoulders are much more equipped for carrying our worries and cares. If you’re looking for a Christian song for encouragement and strength in a difficult time, then “Shoulders” is a great place to start.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
You’re right here, pulling me through
You carry my weakness, my sickness, my brokenness
All on Your shoulders
Your shoulders
You are my rest, my rescue
I don’t have to see to believe that You’re lifting me up
On Your shoulders
Your shoulders.”
There Was Jesus – Zach Williams, Dolly Parton
This is one of those songs that I can listen to every day and get something new from it.
If you’ve been put in a place where it feels like your entire world is falling apart, let this song remind you that no matter what troubles you face, Jesus has always been and will always be with you.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“When the life I built came crashing to the ground
When the friends I had were nowhere to be found
I couldn’t see it then but I can see it now
There was Jesus.”
Whatever May Come – Adrienne Camp, Jeremy Camp
This beautiful song by Jeremy Camp and his wife Adrienne is a good song for someone going through hard times as it serves as a reminder that Jesus Christ has our backs and whatever may come, He will be the first responder to come to our rescue.

Whatever the fear
Whatever the cost
You always draw near
Whatever the pain
Whatever may come
Whatever may fall
Your love overcomes”
Battle Belongs – Phil Wickham
A few months ago, when I first arrived in Poland, I was going through a rough time. I searched the internet for Christian songs of encouragement and strength and came upon this song by Phil Wickman.
I had been a fan of his since hearing his song “Amazing Grace” and I am truly in awe at this talented man of God. If you are facing a battle that feels unwinnable, let this song remind you that the battle does not belong to you. It belongs to the Lord.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“And if You are for me, who can be against me? Yeah
For Jesus, there’s nothing impossible for You
When all I see are the ashes, You see the beauty
Thank You, God
When all I see is a cross, God, You see the empty tomb”
Way Waker – Leeland
The original version of this song was written by Gospel singer and songwriter “Sinach” who I mentioned in this blog post HERE. But over the years, various, powerful versions of this uplifting Christian song have been recorded in English and even Korean.
No matter the language, or the singer, the lyrics to this song keep reminding us that one of the biggest reasons we love God is because He is always our Way Maker. “Waymaker” is a good song for someone going through hard times.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Even when I don’t see it, You’re working
Even when I don’t feel it (yeah), You’re working
You never stop, You never stop working
You never stop, You never stop working”

We’ve all been in a situation where we feel like we’re fighting our own battles, and we’re losing. In this powerful Christian song for encouragement and strength, Riley Clemmons encourages and reminds us that we do not need to fight on our own because our Lord is fighting on our behalf.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Every word is a promise you keep (Oh, oh)
‘Cause you love me like nobody else (Nobody)
You stand up for me (You stand up for me)
In the darkest night (In the darkest night)
When my faith is weak (Yeah, yeah)
You’re still by my side (My side)
You will never stop fighting for me”
Overwhelmed – Big Daddy Weave
This song was first introduced to me when I was going through my divorce. At that time I had no reason to smile and no reason to lift my hands in worship.
Big Daddy Weave has some of the most wonderful gospel songs of encouragement and strength, and their songs carried me through some really tough times.
After really listening to this song and thinking about how good God is to us and how much He loves us, I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by His love. If you’re going through a difficult time and need a reason to smile, let this song remind you of God’s grace and love.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“I know the power of Your cross
Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God
All that You’ve done is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
In the glory of Your presence
I’m overwhelmed
I’m overwhelmed by You”
Still – Hillary Scott & The Scott Family
In late 2020 the world fell into this time of worry and panic due to the virus that took many lives. So many became jittery and worried because the future seemed uncertain.
If you struggle with worry and doubt daily, let this song be a reminder that you have no need to fear the future because your future is in the hands of the one who already knows it. Let this Christian song for encouragement and strength remind you that you are never alone because God is in control.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“You’re parting waters, making a way for me
You’re moving mountains that I don’t even see
You’ve answered my prayer before I even speak
All You need for me to be is still”
Overcomer – Mandisa
No matter what life might bring your way, the Lord wants you and me to be overcomers. He wants us to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off and move forward.
This song by Mandisa is one such song for anyone who has ever been defeated, overwhelmed or disheartened.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight until the final round
You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it’s hopeless
That’s when He reminds You
That you’re an overcomer”
God’s Not Done With You – Tauren Wells
There are so many of us who are pinned down by the weight of our past. We believe that because we have sinned and because we have done things that we are not proud of, Jesus’ love for us will run dry.
But that is not true. Tauren Wells reminds us that even when we feel like giving up and even when we feel like surrendering, we shouldn’t, because God is not done with us.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“He’s got a plan, this is part of it
He’s gonna finish what He started
He’s got a plan, this is part of it
He’s gonna finish what He started
He’s not done
God’s not done writing your story”
Tell Your Heart To Beat Again – Danny Gokey
Are you going through a time where everything feels impossible? If you are living your life in defeat, pain and grief, this song is the reminder that God is our great physician.
God will heal any and all wounds and He will never leave us or forsake us even when we go through the fire and the flood.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday’s a closing door
You don’t live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you’ve been
And tell your heart to beat again”
Sleep In The Storm – Unspoken
At first, when I heard this song, I didn’t understand it at all. Why would Jesus want us to sleep in a storm?
Isn’t a storm dangerous and don’t we need to be protected from it?
When you really begin to listen to the words you remember that Jesus himself slept through a raging storm because He knew the God He served. We serve a great and mighty God, and as long as He is in control, we too can sleep through any storm.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Let the thunder be my comfort
Let the lightning be my guide
Let the waves that rise around me
Hold me gently through the night
For the winds that seem against me
Push me right into Your arms
Teach me how to sleep in the storm”
Carry Me – Kevin Downswell
This song was introduced to me by a friend of mine. He had been going through a rough time when this song was sent to him by a friend of his.
In this song, Kevin Downswell tells us that though our journey might be long and weary, and though we might come upon powerful enemies, we have a Father who will carry us through it until we get to our destination.

“When the road is long and heavy
When it’s dark and I can’t see clearly
I will lift mine eyes to the hills
From whence my help cometh
My help, it comes from You”
Greater – MercyMe
This song is one of the more fun songs on the list. Sometimes you’re sitting in your bed crying your eyes out and need a pick-me-up. This delightful song by MercyMe will encourage you to have faith in God while giving you a reason to get up and get to dancing.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“And greater is the One living inside of me
Than he who is living in the world

Bring your hurt
And bring your tears
There’ll be no condemnation here
You are holy, righteous and redeemed”
25 Christian Songs for Encouragement and Strength (cont’d)
The God Who Stays – Matthew West
The God Who Stays is a powerful song by singer Matthew West. There are so many of us who feel like our perfect God sometimes gets fed up with us because we are flawed, imperfect human beings.
We often believe that God will forsake us because we keep on sinning and falling short.
But in this uplifting gospel song, Matthew West tells us time and time again that our God loves us way too much to ever leave us or forsake us. If that doesn’t encourage you when you’re stuck in a rut I don’t know what will.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“You’re the God who stays
You’re the one who runs in my direction
When the whole world walks away
You’re the God who stands
With wide-open arms
And You tell me nothing I have ever done can separate my heart
From the God who stays”
Surrounded (Fight My Battles) – Michael W. Smith
Renowned Christian contemporary artist and worship leader Michael Smith gives us a simple message in this powerful song. Though we might look surrounded, though our foes might outnumber us ten to one, we have an even more powerful warrior on our side– God.
So yes, we might be surrounded on every side, we might be cast down, but we will never be defeated as long as the Lord is on our side.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You”
Break Up Song – Francesca Battistelli
When you’re going through a really tough time, and all hope feels lost, it can be really easy to become a prisoner (or a slave) to fear. But while we might be afraid of times, we don’t have to let it control our lives.
In this anthem, Francesca Battistelli tells us that we are strong, we are brave, we have Christ and because of this, there is nothing we need to fear.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Sing fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong, brave
And I am free”
Split The Sea – Hannah Kerr
You might have found yourself in a situation where you’ve done all that you could do and nothing worked, and now you feel like you are literally caught in the Red Sea.
In this song, we are reminded that God is still who He says that He is and if we allow Him to, if we surrender our situation to our Father, He will do much more than we could ever think or imagine.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“I believe
Every promise that You’ve spoken
I believe
You are faithful every moment
It may look impossible
But You’re the God of miracles
You have always made a way for me
You can still split the sea”
Live Like You’re Loved – Hawk Nelson
There are so many of us who, when we’ve messed up when things aren’t going well, feel like we aren’t loved by anyone. We oftentimes feel rejected, and alone.
In this beautiful anthem, we are reminded that we are loved. We are loved by God and He showed us this amazing love when He sent His one and only son to come into the world and be crucified on the cross for us.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Live like you’re loved, walk like you’re free
Stand like you know, who he made you to be
Live like you’re loved, like you believe
His love is all, that you’ll ever need
Live like you’re loved”
Intentional – Travis Greene
Have you ever felt like things are just falling apart before your eyes? Like you’ve been shown an open door but it just slams shut before you can even walk through it?
I’ve been there and I just felt like the most unlucky person in the world.
Travis Greene shouts it from the rooftops in this Christian song to serve as a reminder that all things, no matter if they are good or bad, are working for our good because God is intentional in all that He does.
Even when we feel like life is too much, there is someone we can go to who has our best intentions at heart.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“We can smile ’cause we know it’s working
Through the hurt and the pain
I know it’s working for my good
I know it’s working for my good
I don’t have to worry ’cause
It’s working for me, yeah”
There Is Power – Lincoln Brewster
What does it mean that there is power in the name of Jesus? It means that no matter what life may throw your way, once you call upon the name of Jesus, things change.
Knees bow. Tongues confess. Miracles happen.
If you’re feeling like you have no power to change your situation, just call upon the name of Jesus because there is power in His name.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“No fear, no lie
Can stand against us now
He is here,
The Word has come
To silence every doubt
He is here“
Levistance – Raise A Hallelujah
One song that I listen to repeatedly is “Raise A Hallelujah” by the group Levistance. The words of this song remind us that when we are faced with battles that seem unbeatable, all we need to do is to praise the Lord and He will fight for us.
We are reminded that our weapons don’t lie in the things around us, but in who is within us. The weapons of our warfare are not physical weapons but spiritual weapons that can win any battle.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“Sing a little louder (in the presence of my enemies)
Sing a little louder (louder than the unbelief)
Sing a little louder (my weapon is a melody)
Sing a little louder (Heaven comes to fight for me)
I’m gonna sing in the middle of the storm
Louder and louder you’re gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated. The King is alive!”
Control – Tenth Avenue North
When going through hard times, it’s often easier for us to want to control everything that we can especially when there are numerous things outside of our control.
The message of this song is so important for us because as Christians we have to constantly give up control of our lives to God in order to allow Him to move freely in our lives.
When we feel overwhelmed it’s time for us to let go and give control over to God
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“I’ve had plans
Shattered and broken
Things I have hoped in
Fall through my hands
You have plans
To redeem and restore me
You’re behind and before me
Oh, help me believe”
While I’m Waiting – John Waller
There have been so many times in my life where I’ve gone through difficulties and had to wait on God. I recently spoke about my journey to get to Poland and all the obstacles I had to overcome in order to get here.
The waiting was hard. It felt endless, but this song really helped me to hold on when things felt like they would never get better.
Waiting on God tests our patience but while you are waiting, remember that God is with you. He is for you and He will never turn His back on you.
Most Encouraging Lyrics:
“While I’m waiting I will serve You
While I’m waiting I will worship
While I’m waiting I will not faint
I’ll be running the race even while I wait
I will move ahead bold and confident
I’ll be taking every step in obedience”

My problem is that in most of these songs the name of God or Jesus is never mentioned. As far as the listener goes they could be singing to Buddah, Allah or any one of the many Hindu gods.
“You” is not specific.
SheIsAMess says
I definitely understand what you’re saying. Sometimes I do have to really dig to find songs like that. I do also understand that many singers are speaking directly to God so oftentimes the “You” is God.
David Brancecum says
I get the concern, and as a music minister I want to be right before God. But in the context of a Christian service, God is implied. Do I need to say your name If I am standing in front of you to address you? No. You know I am talking to you if I am looking at you and addressing you. Also, if the author says in album liner they are addressing God, there’s your context. Hymns dont all address Gods name either. How we Express or thoughts and feelings to God need to be respected and not judged. God knows our hearts and prayers and intentions. Just some considerations. There concern is real I get that. Peace.
Lisa Cheney Bentley says
I absolutely agree with you. When I read his concern, I thought, “but God knows our heart and intent”.
Hannah says
Usually, I do not read posts on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do so! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thanks, very nice post.
Nnenna Onah says
These songs and lyrics are super helpful.thank you for this .They came right in the nick of time. The content and message of your post is beautiful too.God bless you.
SheIsAMess says
Aww God bless you!
Peter Ludwinski says
Yes, that’s true – I totally agree with you. However, I think possibly these artists are more concerned with reaching the lost(OUTSIDE “The Church”) then the actual Christian INSIDE the sanctuary.
Please don’t let your ‘problem’ hinder your worship/devotion.
SheIsAMess says
I can agree to an extent with what you’re saying. Thanks for sharing your point of view.
Jenifer says
I downloaded all the songs and I must say they are amazing.. they are soul lifting songs… Am in love with all of the songs…
